    FAQs

Does the PCI DSS apply in Australia?

The PCI DSS is an international standard and applies to all organisations across the world that use payment cards to facilitate payment. All Australian organisations that accept card payments are required to comply with the PCI DSS regardless of business size. PCI DSS is a security standard, not a law.

What are the changes for PCI compliance in 2024?

On 31 March 2024, PCI DSS version 3.2. 1 officially retired.

The next day, on 1 April 2024, compliaance with PCI DSS version 4.0 becomes mandatory.

However, best practice requirements - standards requiring special technology to achieve alignment, aren't expected to be completely complied with until 31 March 2025.

    What does PCI DSS affect?

The PCI DSS applies to all entities that store, process, and/or transmit cardholder data. It covers technical and operational system components included in or connected to cardholder data. If you are a merchant who accepts or processes payment cards, you must comply with the PCI DSS.

What is the fine for PCI DSS in Australia?

Non-compliance can result in fines to merchants of at least $10,000 per month and $500,000 per card brand (e.g. Visa, MasterCard) if there is a data breach.

    Is PCI DSS compliance mandatory?

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is required by the contract for those handling cardholder data, whether you are a start-up or a global enterprise. Your business must always be compliant, and your compliance must be validated annually.
